No, I don't teach math. But when I showed this to the math teacher he was like "oh yeah, that's in one of the textbooks." Then he showed it to me in the textbook, along with a couple of other similar weird occurrances. He figures (as I'm sure most people who look at this do) that the diagonal division in the resultant rectangle is not a perfect diagonal. There is probably an infinitesimal gap which causes the additional square.
